SunButter
Red River Commodities, for several years, enjoyed a large export market for sunflower kernels. During the late ‘90’s and
early ’00 many new origins introduced a lower quality sunflower kernel at cheaper prices and quickly became major suppliers
to the export markets. At that time Red River Commodities began to research new and consistent outlets for the kernel.
In cooperation with the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Services, Red River Commodities began
a two year project to develop a substitute for peanut butter made from sunflower seeds. During this time period Red River
Commodities invested in new hybrids, specialized production areas, created SunGold Foods, Inc. and created a peanut and
tree nut free environment at both companies.
Today, SunGold Foods’ SunButter is found in grocery chains, health food stores, school lunch programs and used as an ingredient
in baking and snack foods. Several schools have decided to be peanut and tree nut free replacing peanut butter with SunButter.
SunGold Foods is now the largest customer of Red River Commodities for sunflower kernel.
