RED RIVER COMMODITIES
NEWS LETTER
SUNFLOWER WEEK
IN REVIEW
JANUARY 10, 2003
FINAL USDA REPORT
The 2002 drought was devastating for sunflower production and the final
USDA yield and production numbers confirm what the industry already
knows. Abandonment of planted acres was likely a record high 15
percent this year, usually that number is about 3 percent. SD had
the highest number of abandoned acres followed by Kansas and
Colorado. Average state yields were reduced from the October report
for all states with the exception of ND. Total production of
oil-types is down 26 percent from last year and confection production is
down 31 percent from 2001. You can get a more detailed comparison in
the 'Sunstats' section of the NSA website at http://www.sunflowernsa.com/research_statistics/usda_reports.asp.
